Landslide in Bantarkawung Damages 11 Homes, Residents Urged to Evacuate
BREBES, Indonesia - A landslide triggered by heavy rain and strong winds struck Dukuh Tengah hamlet in Karangpari village, Bantarkawung district, Brebes regency, on Wednesday afternoon, damaging at least 11 houses, local authorities said.
The incident occurred at around 4:14 p.m. local time after prolonged rainfall destabilised a hillside above a residential area. Seven houses suffered structural damage, while four others were classified as at risk due to their proximity to the affected slope.
No fatalities or injuries were reported. However, residents living in impacted homes were evacuated as a precaution amid concerns over possible secondary landslides.
The Brebes Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), working alongside local emergency units, community volunteers, and village officials, carried out an initial damage assessment and emergency response.
Santoso Widianto, acting head of public order and security in Bantarkawung district, said authorities moved quickly after receiving reports from residents. “A total of 11 houses are affected. We have advised residents to temporarily evacuate as the slope remains unstable,” he said.
BPBD Brebes South representative Budi Sujatmiko said monitoring would continue as weather conditions remain unpredictable. “Our team is conducting field assessments and securing the surrounding area. With further rainfall possible, residents must remain vigilant,” he said.
He added that ground movement could still occur if heavy rain persists. Coordination with village and sub-district officials is ongoing to prevent residents from returning to damaged homes before the area is declared safe.
BPBD’s emergency operations centre said data collection on material losses was underway. The village administration has also provided temporary shelter and basic logistical support for displaced residents.
As of Thursday evening, emergency personnel remained on standby at the site. Residents have been urged to report any signs of soil movement immediately.
