| Brebes News - Brebes regency allocates Rp 500 billion to build tidal flood barriers in five coastal districts as part of long-term efforts to address recurring seawater flooding. |
BREBES, Indonesia – The Brebes regency government in Central Java has allocated around 500 billion rupiah ($32 million) to build tidal flood barriers across five coastal districts, as part of efforts to mitigate recurring seawater flooding.
The plan was announced by Brebes Regent Idza Priyanti during a social assistance meeting in Prapag Kidul village, according to local government officials.
The proposed barriers will be constructed in the coastal districts of Losari, Wanasari, Brebes, Bulakamba and Tanjung, areas that are frequently affected by tidal flooding, locally known as rob.
Funding and scope
According to the Brebes Public Information Office (PPID), the project will be financed through a combination of local government funds and national development programmes, with total spending estimated at around Rp 500 billion.
In addition to the construction of flood barriers, the plan also includes raising road levels in several low-lying coastal locations to improve access during periods of high tides.
A recurring threat
Tidal flooding has become a persistent threat to coastal communities in Brebes, inundating homes, disrupting economic activity and damaging infrastructure.
Losari district, one of the areas targeted by the project, is reported to experience tidal flooding almost every month, particularly during full-moon tides or lunar perigee events, when sea levels rise significantly.
Local officials view the construction of coastal barriers as a long-term solution to reduce the impact of repeated flooding.
Challenges ahead
Despite the scale of the investment, the project faces several challenges.
Officials acknowledge the need for long-term funding sustainability, as the effectiveness of flood barriers must be continuously monitored. Coastal residents have also expressed concern that construction delays could prolong their exposure to flooding risks.
Maintenance is another key issue, as the barriers will require regular upkeep to withstand coastal abrasion and seawater pressure.
Official response
Regent Idza Priyanti said the local government was committed to protecting coastal residents.
“We will take all possible measures to handle and anticipate tidal flooding in order to ensure the safety and comfort of people living in Brebes’ northern coastal areas,” she said.
Community role
Authorities have encouraged residents to stay informed about project developments through official government channels and to participate in local discussions on coastal mitigation.
Community involvement, including documentation of flood-prone areas, is expected to support coordination between residents and the government during implementation.
Outlook
The allocation of Rp 500 billion marks one of the largest coastal protection investments undertaken by the Brebes regency. Coastal communities are hoping the project will significantly reduce the impact of tidal flooding that has repeatedly disrupted daily life in the area.
